Diego is a 500 year old vampire of Obsidian Butterfly. It is to him that she orders the were-jaguars to make sacrifice. Anita watches as he refuses because, as he describes, he is not "a lover of men". It appears that he has been refusing to do what his master asks for centuries.
It appears that this a personal vendetta against him because he and others were in fact conquerors who took all the spoils of war from the women of the land and now they are being punished in return.
