Almost every Saturday ,a group of people stage an open demonstration
in the middle of our main city road dressed in red and yellow.
I got chatting to them and they told me about
their practise , Falun Gong and the reason for their protest.
Im attending a Public talk on wednesday night
to hear more about it and the persecution of their friends back home in China.
I looked up a few sites and heres a run down about it.
Falun Gong originated in prehistoric times but only came to public notice in 1992
when Li Hongzhi, referred to as The Master, set up a study centre in Beijing.
Falun Dafa originally refered to the movement that practices Falun Gong.
Falun Gong is the practice of a range of exercises related to the ancient Chinese
art of Qigong - a kind of breathing meditation.
In China, hundreds of people gathered together in squares and parks throughout the
It includes a mixture of Buddhist and Taoist beliefs .Falun Gong concentrates on the
virtues of Zhen-Shan-Ren, or truthfulness, benevolence, and forbearance. The goal is
to become enlightened to the truth of human life and to cultivate oneself to higher
levels of existence.
The group was outlawed in China on July 22, 1999.
The Chinese government has arrested hundreds of Falun Gong practitioners
and is still proceeding with trials. Some have been sent directly to labor camps without trials.
Others have received over a year long incarceration sentances. There are many reports
of harassement and abuse, from drugging to beatings, to the kidnapping of members.
Even more sinister , the prisoners are being used for organ harvesting.
No legal representation on behalf of them from the concerned international
community is allowed to be present at the trial.
David Kilgour and David Matas conducted an investigation into the Chinese trade
in organs from imprisoned Falun Gong practitioners.Kilgour took on the Falun Gong project
last spring after retiring from
the Canadian Parliament.
The victims are killed for their organs, which are sent off to various medical facilities.
Organ sales is now a highly profitable business in China .Neither Kilgour nor Matas are
Falun Gong practitioners.
The Kilgour-Matas report "makes a very convincing case," says Kirk Allison,
associate director of the Program in Human Rights and Medicine at the University of Minnesota.
It is estimated that 100,000 Falun Gong practitioners have disappeared or are under arrest.
Their family members don't know their whereabouts.
Three weeks after the Sujiatun Concentration Camp was revealed, China's
Ministry of Health hastily issued a Temporary Regulation on Human Organ
Transplants but postponed the date it came into effect until July 1.
Some suspect that the purpose of the delay is to leave enough time to destroy all living evidence.
