or

How to not get laughed off the forum in under a week

*cue 50's educational film music*

So you are new to the forum, fresh from the internet and filled with all kinds of confusing information from books and websites and things you've seen on TV and movies. So you hop on the forum and get accepted as a member. Boy oh boy, so you decide to start off with a post in the Welcome thread. Hey look! Everyone is nice to you, they are friendly. . . you feel good. So you decide to go ahead and post a thread telling us all about the things you learned from the intraweb, then you decide to post about your “Awakening” as a vampire. But wait! Your story isn't as cool as the others, so you decide to tell a few fibs about being immortal (well, you did cast that spell last week) and growing up in London (you had a dream last night about it, and you read a lot of vampire books set there, so surely you lived there in a past life and an author wouldn't lie to you, would she?). Without realizing it, you've crossed over into the n00b zone.

“But wait” you may say, “how do I post here without being laughed out of the forum within a week?”

I'm glad you asked, because I've got a few pointers to help you out.

Tip 1 – Lurk

I can't stress this enough. Before you post, read a bunch of threads. Not just the opening post, but the entire thread. Get a feel for how we do things, the kind of things we talk about and who among posters gets laughed at and who gets respect.

Tip 2 – PM a member

If you are having trouble figuring out what the board is like, talk to a member. IM someone, PM them, or just hang out in Chat. This will get you known and get your foot in the door, so you aren't a completely new face being thrust at us.

Tip 3 – Being 13 will not get you laughed at, acting 13 will

Spell check, grammar check, and for the love of God, capitalize, punctuate, space, and type out the whole word. Most of us are willing to put up with those of you who are young, few of us are willing to put up with people who type posts that make our eyes bleed.

Tip 4 – Sources and Research

You will find that members of the Forum are rather well learned. We have within our ranks Historians, Philosophers, Witches, Students of the occult, Biologists, and the spare Teacher or two. As such, we will expect you to have researched anything you tell us about, and be willing to provide sources (as in multiples across books, scholarly journals, websites, and/or experience) to back up your claims. If you are simply asking a question, this is not nearly as important, as you are seeking knowledge, not trying to dispense it. However, if answering a question, be willing to cite your sources. If what you are claiming falls in line with what we have come to understand, then you will not be asked to. However, if it goes against it, then you'll be required to provide an adequate explanation for it. (after all, if you say you are a person and I say you are a banana, it's on me to prove it, not you to prove otherwise)

Tip 5 – Critical Thought

It's called Science. It's a simple system that states basically that logic and experimentation can discover truth only when used together. This is a little bit of a weird subject, because the Occult is largely unstudied by science. Vampirism is not classified as anything more than a blood fetish by the medical profession and the occult is most often brushed off as pseudo science without science actually studying it. However, this is not an excuse to bounce off the walls and make bizarre claims. We will expect you to back up everything you claim to be able to do, or we'll laugh at you. Above all, apply Critical Thought to everything you read and everything you hear, whether it be from Lady Happyfluffybunny Riversilverwolf's webpage on wicca or whether it's being told to you by someone here on the Realm, do not accept anything you are told as Gospel fact.

Tip 6 – Be friendly

Don't troll, don't be a jerk, and don't go out of your way to put people down. First, that's my job. Second, if done incorrectly, it makes you look like a spaz and gets you banned. If you get teased, roll with the punches. If you didn't read this till you already posted and made yourself look the fool, then suck it up, and admit that you were wrong. Respect the mods, they are clearly marked for your convince (and caged for your safety, refrain from poking them or sticking your hand in the cage) and will be your best friends or your worst enemies.

Tip 7,8,9 and 10 – it's stickied for a reason

I'm going to say this once, and only once. But this is very important. Lean close to the screen. . . closer. . . closer still. . . just a little closer. . . . good

READ THE RULES AND FAQ!

Thank you, that is all

Conclusions

Follow these tips and you'll have a good time. The realm is a different place from what most vampire sites are, and we like it that way. You'll not find many fakers (unless I'm tearing their story apart or laughing at them), and most people here are quite knowledgeable. If any of you have questions or comments, I'd be happy to talk to you on PM or e-mail, and if any newbies have problems or questions, I'm happy to help however I can. Till then, happy foruming.

That is the funniest thing I have read in a while. Though I don't think the semblance of mockery and ridicule is in my head...or is it?! O.o

This seems to be a well thought post. Though i am provoked to indicate that you're not taking under cosideration Tip 6- Be friendly. Play nice.

On the contrary...

Besides which, he only attacks the stories of obvious roleplayers, and simply asks for clarification or explaination of others. There is certainly nothing unfriendly or bad play in being inquisitive and knowing how to use resources, like Google. Well, except when he's poking the caged Mods...that's not very nice.

Take them as friendly suggestions for newcomers (and older members, too) that make everyone's lives easier.

Nothing wrong with that, i most definitely agree with his methods, though it's a matter of prespective. He might still be right but that doesn't make him anymore friendlier, it is the approach to any matter, not the matter itself, that makes people affable. Though i enjoyed the thread before all else. Must have taken sometime to write it. It's easy to comprehend, so it might as well be effecive if people take notice of it.

Ah, he wasn’t confused--see, the job was just getting so extensive and time consuming that We opened up a second position.

Correction--it is a science, just not rocket science. I would know.

Why? Guilty conscience? *winks*

as for the "caged mods" I let you have some fun
Ah, here is where you are quite confused, Sh1--do you really think it is you who lets Me have fun? Surely you must realize that it's the other way around...

*knocks the admin's Door to see if we can make this one a sticky* I agree with brol good stuff indeed.

Soul, believeme this is Taka's version of extremely friendly, you should have seen the original and you would understand what I mean.

Now now to Taka and Sh1, play nice boys, I happen to be very happy to have you two on the job, besides we have plenty of funny people to take care of to keep you both occupied.

Isealdor, it’s a futile effort, his conscience hasn’t been unwrapped yet, and the boy has no idea how to put it to good use.

As for the cage thing... I really hope none of you consider this Mod in a cage, there is only one that can do that and get away with it, and he knows how to deal with having this kitten uncaged afterwards, if you ask him I'm sure he would tell you it hurts Wink. Anyways... aren’t 2 mods in a cage far more fun instead? :P

As I said before play nice boys, all of you.

Playfully yet respectfully and yes amused, S.

The rules can be found in the forum section "Forum Rules and Information", and the most useful threads are, of course, the rules themselves and Laurasia's Realms' Ultimate FAQ.

i have one thing to say to anyone who hasent been here befor that is achuly reading this. please dont ask what it takes to be a vampire... and i only mean this like this. if you came here becauls you want to be a vampire or are trying to fakee it... please dont ask what you can do to beter fake it....im tiyerd of reading the same stuff over and over. people thinking there smart and ask a question that semes logical enof to ask and then tend to go into detalis on specific things to the point of reveal to there true motives of trying just to beter fake being a vampire...so if thats your intent...please, dont post, dont say shit to me, i dont want to hear it, and go awaye.

but other than that, i say welcome

Let you not unleash my dark side...it scares even me.

with humble intent, Spike
